Daniel 2:20-34 - "Give Thanks"

Daniel 2:20-34 - "Give Thanks"

“The first we can learn from Daniel is to pray big prayers. Daniel prayed for an extraordinary thing—to be able to know and interpret a king’s dream with the consequence of failure being death. When the last time you prayed a big, bold prayer? Not the kind of, “God, please help me find a parking spot!” kind of prayer. A prayer that takes real faith to pray because what if God doesn’t answer in the way we want God to? A kind of prayer that asks, in hope, but what if God does?”

Micah 3:5-12 "Saints Past, Present, and Yet to Come"

Micah 3:5-12 "Saints Past, Present, and Yet to Come"

“You have only one wild and precious life to lead. You have only this time in history. No one knows how many days on Earth we get to live. No one knows how long it will be until that day when, as Revelation says, God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. If you knew that today was your All Saints Day, how would you want to spend the next year? Who would you forgive? Who would you tell truth to? Whose voices would you listen to? What leaders would you follow? How would you spend your time?”

Genesis 37: 1-4, 12-28 - "The Ugly Middle"

Genesis 37: 1-4, 12-28 - "The Ugly Middle"

“This chapter is bleak. We are in the ugly middle of Joseph’s story. The lectionary leaves us with the great-grandson of Abraham betrayed and enslaved. It is as dark as the pit he is thrown into. Genesis 37 says nothing of God’s sovereignty or hope for Joseph’s future. Much later, Joseph will tell his brothers, “Even though you intended to do harm to me, God intended it for good.” But he does not say that today. Today, we have no evidence that God will use any of this for good. Today, we have only the pit, only the horrific betrayal of Joseph’s own family, only his sale into bondage and slavery.”

Leviticus 25:8-17 - "Good News for Who?"

Leviticus 25:8-17 - "Good News for Who?"

“The year of Jubilee is good news for all, even when it doesn’t feel like it. It is good news for those who are freed from bondage. And it is good news for those who have been complicit in doing the binding. In enslaving. In profiting off others’ suffering. Someday, they will look back on the Jubilee year as good, but not before it hurts. Giving up ill-gotten treasures, land, and servants will not be easy. It will not feel fair or just. It will not sound like good news in the short term. But God knows what real good news is.”

Genesis 1:1-2:4 - "A Moment in Time"

Genesis 1:1-2:4 - "A Moment in Time"

“I believe this country is in the midst of a Kairos moment right now. In the past week, we have seen peaceful protests in over 500 cities in every state in America and across the globe. Millions and millions of people are uniting on a scale many generations have not seen before to denounce the evils of racism and demand a new, just system. It is a reckoning about what public safety and criminal justice mean and if our current system is able to achieve those ends. It is a moment in history of mass solidarity and cooperation. ”

Ash Wednesday - "To"

Ash Wednesday - "To"

“Ashes to Ashes. Dust to dust. It’s a refrain we repeat every year at the beginning of Lent and this year, I’m struck by how much is contained in those little letters—“to.” Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. All that we know, and love, and experience is merely in between our beginning and ending as dust. “

Matthew 17:1-9 - "As Much of God as a Hand Can Hold"

Matthew 17:1-9 - "As Much of God as a Hand Can Hold"

“This is the way that God comes into the world: not simply the brilliant cloud of mystery, not only a voice thundering from heaven but also a human hand laid upon a shoulder and the words, “Do not be afraid.” God comes to us quietly, gently, that we may draw near and without fear. God’s glory is majestic and so far beyond our capacity to receive it that we can take just as much of God’s glory as a human hand can hold. “

Matthew 24 - A Thrill of Hope

Matthew 24 - A Thrill of Hope

“We can miss God’s presence in our midst. We can fail to pay attention. We can be like the people in the days of Noah—eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage. All good things, but the wrong setting they are coping mechanisms for a world that feels too painful to pay full attention to. Coping mechanisms have their place, but coping is not the same thing as fully living. To live a life fully alive requires paying attention.”

Luke 6- A Third Way

Luke 6- A Third Way

“I ask you, where in your life do you see only bad options? Where is God calling you to creativity and courage? Where is God calling to pay close attention to those around you and notice the pain, injustice, or hurt around you? Where can you carve out a third way where none seems to exist?”

2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 - "Who Raised You?"

2 Timothy 3:14-4:5 - "Who Raised You?"

“Paul’s charge to Timothy is not to hold on to scripture alone. It begins with encouragement to remember the two steady streams that have filled his reservoir of faith—the people that have taught him and scripture. It’s no accident that Paul first mentions those who taught him. The women that raised Timothy are not incidental to his faith; they are essential. “

Jeremiah 1:4-10 "Unqualified"

“But this passage isn’t about me and this sermon isn’t just for me. It’s for everyone who God has called—those of you who are reluctant leaders or those who are ready and willing. The category of “people God has known, and loved, and called” includes everyone inside this room. From the children who are “too young to lead” to the elderly members mistakenly believed to have “nothing left to offer.”

John 21:1-19 "Redemption Places"

John 21:1-19 "Redemption Places"

“Why does John’s gospel have two endings? I think it is because Eastertide—this of resurrection celebration—is far more complicated than celebration alone. John’s gospel has post- resurrection rejoicing but there’s also ambivalence and sadness; unmet expectations and disappointment.  This a story of loss and hope. Of holding on in bad circumstances. Of the endurance of love over despair.”
