Read MoreApril was full of chaotic weather that couldn’t seem to make up its mind (is it spring yet? only 3 days a week? sure, why not). As it turns out, even the chaos can be a recipe for life and growth, which I saw in my own life. That being said, I don’t mind seeing April in the rearview mirror.
Read MoreI won an award at Columbia based on the topic “how to teach the Bible in public schools.” I might not have done what the award creator was expecting, but I ended up with a fascinating project on how to teach religious texts to teenagers in public schools.
Read MoreMarch roars like a lion, or in the case of Atlanta, is too cold and rainy to be enjoyable but not cold enough to snow. Between a month of rain and the final weeks of Lent, I'm more than ready to say goodbye to March. There were a few bright and shiny moments of March and I finally saw the ocean once again.
Read MoreWhen the Parkland shooting happened last month, I was numb at first. I couldn't even feel the depth of the pain for the Parkland community. There had already been 8 school shootings in 2018 and I thought this one would fade from the news just as quickly as those had. I have never been so glad to be wrong. The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have changed the national conversation about gun control and what the response of survivors can be.
Read MoreJanuary may have lasted forever, but February was over in the blink of an eye. This month was about settling into the normalcy of life in Atlanta once again. I saw several of the Oscar-nominated movies, went to the opening weekend of Black Panther, and did a lot of cooking. Life isn’t very glamorous these days, as my One Second Everyday App will attest, but I know it’s still where I’m supposed to be.
Read MoreI didn't use to talk about white supremacy. When I first began to really learn about the injustices facing people of color in America, it was in the context of reconciliation. I learned that white people and people of color were separated and our communities relationships were badly fractured. These fractures required reconciliation. While that may be true, I've begun to see that I moved too quickly to reconciliation.
Read MoreJanuary included over 50 hours on airplanes, not to mention countless trains, buses, cars, and boats. This month I got to see new parts of this world and be in all three of my homes. What an incredible (and busy!) month.
Read MoreIn the middle of your time at Columbia, all M.Div students are required to go on an immersion learning trip, either in the city of Atlanta, within the United States, or somewhere around the world. I was chosen for the trip to India, as one of 14 students and led by 3 faculty members. Above all, I am so grateful to this incredible group of peers and professors. I was constantly encouraged and challenged by each of them.
Read MoreThis year I'm chasing after every adventure and opportunity that comes my way. Who knows the full scope of what this year will truly hold, but for now it looks like I'll be eating lots of curry, Ben & Jerry's and maple syrup, and beer in 2018!
Read MoreIt's hard to believe 2017 is almost over. It felt like it would never end, but we did. We survived this year. December started with a bit of chaos as I tried to finish all my school work before leaving to come out for my grandpa's funeral. I left the week before the semester ended, so it was a mad dash to finish all my work. I was so grateful to be with family to celebrate my grandfather's incredible life. His funeral was just as he would have wanted it- ending at a graveside with cows in the field next door and people riding by on horseback.
Read MoreIt feels strange to have the last Sunday of Advent fall on Christmas Eve. Many churches have forgone a Sunday morning service, in favor of evening Christmas Eve services. I understand why, but it still makes me sad to skip this last week of Advent. It's arguably the best week- Love. It's the "reason for the season" as some might say.
Read MoreThis might be my favorite Sunday of Advent- the pink candle of Joy. I love that the third week is different than all the rest and although we've still got a ways to go until Christmas, we're turning our hearts toward joy. I cannot hear the word without thinking of one of my favorite animated movies, Inside out.
Read MoreThey have treated the wound of my people carelessly,
saying, “Peace, peace,”
when there is no peace.
They say hope is a beautiful thing, but this year, I find it absolutely terrifying. During this time of year, Christians lift up the importance of hope in a bleak, winter world. The first week of Advent is when we are reminded to have hope because we know the light is coming. We have hope in the midst of this long and dark season of waiting because Christ is coming and our hope will be fulfilled.
